Day 9: He is With Me

Let’s just stop for a moment and think about God. He’s pretty incredible, huh? The more we stop and meditate on Him, the more His wonderous qualities shine to light. He is all-powerful, all-knowing, sovereign, holy, majestic, and FULL of glory. But you know what else? He is with you, and He’s with me.

Let’s look back to the story of Joseph in the Old Testament. One thing that is abundantly clear right away, is how hard of a life Joseph lived. I mean, it was so bad that his own brothers sold him into slavery! Then, he moved up the ranks in Egypt and things started to look good for him, he was falsely accused and thrown into prison. Then, his prison friends got released, and we are hopeful they will free him, but they do not. Through all his ups and downs, this one idea is repeated FOUR times: the Lord is with Joseph.

“The Lord was with Joseph, so he succeeded in everything he did as he served in the home of his Egyptian master.” Genesis 39:2

This message is similarly repeated three more times in Genesis 39:2, 39:21 and 39:23.

The amazing thing is that God is with us too. He is there with us on our first day home with a newborn. He is there with us when we are dealing with our mini mob at the grocery store. He is with us when we don’t understand why our child is experiencing pain, sickness and setbacks.

It can be hard to picture God in our personal prisons. We usually think of him in green pastures, soaking in the sun, basking in the good times of life. But, let this be a reminder to us that he is just as present in the good times as he is during our troublesome times. And he is there every step of the way.

When we look back at Genesis 39:2 or the other mentions of the Lord being with Joseph, in each verse there is a measure of success. This is true for us as well. Even in trouble, God is blessing us. His plan for us is always good, even when things don’t appear that way.

My hope is that we slow down with this knowledge and reminder, and focus on growing a desire and passion for sensing God in our midst. Maybe that can help us not feel so exhausted, we aren’t rushing after him to get to greener pastures. He is right beside us where we are in our current moment.

Let this be a relief. You can stop spinning your wheels and just keep pace with our Lord rather than attempting to play a game of catch-up. Let us absorb God’s presence so deeply that our hearts are strengthened and our faith greater so in each lonely moment we are overcome with the truth that the Lord is with us.

Most loving and gracious God, lift me up in the truth of your presence right here, right now. Help remind me that you are not off in the distance, waiting on me in greener pastures, but that you are right beside me where I am today and in this moment. Let your presence increase my joy and fuel me in a way that only you can do. Help me slow down and focus on keeping pace with you as I live in your presence. In your mighty name, amen.
